Contemporary half calf on marbled paper-laid boards with matching edges and endpapers, spines elaborately gilt tooled with contrasting labels (rather rubbed at spines and corners of boards and some labels chipped - otherwise a firmly bound set). Pp. various, illus with engraved titles (vols VII and VIII with tissue-guards) and b&w plates (pp. 199-122 and 391-394 of vol I loose; previous owner's neat 1877 gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper of each vol).
